Authorities in Nong Cong commune, Thanh Hoa province, on February 22 launched the 2026 Lunar New Year tree-planting festival in tribute to President Ho Chi Minh.
The ceremony was held at Van Hoa Kindergarten at the start of the Lunar New Year. The event reaffirmed the commitment of local Party committees, authorities and residents to environmental protection and climate change response, while promoting the tree-planting movement initiated by President Ho Chi Minh as part of efforts to build sustainable new-style rural areas.
Among those attending were Secretary of the Commune Party Committee and Chairman of the People’s Council Vo Manh Son; Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee Truong Cong Tuan; Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People’s Committee Dong Minh Quan; Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune Pham Thi Hang; and Vice Chairman of the People’s Council Le Van Sang, along with other local officials, armed forces personnel and residents.
In his remarks, Vice Chairman of the Nong Cong Commune People’s Committee Bui Phu Thinh, highlighted the historical significance of the tree-planting festival launched by President Ho Chi Minh. He said tree planting and forest planting and protection not only bring immediate benefits but also contribute in the long term to socio-economic development, environmental protection, improved air quality and climate change adaptation.
In recent years, thousands of trees have been planted along inter-village roads, on school grounds, at cultural houses and in public areas across the commune, contributing to improved environmental conditions. However, amid rising requirements for environmental protection and the development of advanced and model new-style rural areas, the tree-planting movement needs to be carried out in a more regular and effective manner, Bui Phu Thinh said.
He called on local agencies, mass organizations, villages and households to develop specific planting plans, select tree species suited to local soil and climate conditions, and ensure proper post-planting care to improve survival rates and long-term effectiveness. He stressed that the Tree-Planting Festival should be maintained as a sustained activity rather than a symbolic campaign.
At the ceremony, Deputy Secretary of the Commune Party Committee and Chairman of the People’s Committee Dong Minh Quan, beat a ceremonial drum to officially launch the 2026 festival.
Chairwoman of the commune’s Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee Pham Thi Hang called on member organizations and residents to actively participate in planting, caring for and protecting trees. She said the movement should be integrated with patriotic emulation campaigns, particularly the campaign “All people unite to build new-style rural areas and civilized urban areas.”
Local authorities said they would continue promoting public awareness to expand participation in the movement, contributing to greener and cleaner surroundings and improving residents’ quality of life.
Following the ceremony, commune leaders, officials, armed forces members and residents planted trees at Van Hoa Kindergarten, along inter-village roads and in public areas.
The annual spring tree-planting activity aims to improve the landscape and raise environmental awareness, particularly among younger generations.
The launch ceremony concluded with participation from local officials and residents, marking the start of tree-planting activities across the commune in 2026.
