From roofs to water tanks: Spreading love to disadvantaged coastal communities in Quang Binh

08/06/2025

TN&MTOn June 7, 2025, the Agriculture and Environment Magazine (under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) launched a program in Hai Ninh commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province to build a charity house for a disadvantaged family and to donate water tanks to local fishermen who make their living from offshore fishing.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Dao Xuan Hung, Editor-in-Chief of the Agriculture and Environment Magazine, emphasized that this is not merely an annual social welfare activity, but a responsibility embraced by the Journal’s journalists to accompany and support disadvantaged people. This meaningful event is part of a series of activities in response to Vietnam Sea and Islands Week, World Oceans Day (June 8), Action Month for the Environment, and the 100th anniversary of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press (June 21, 1925 – June 21, 2025).

The Agriculture and Environment Magazine consistently regards sharing with struggling farmers and fishermen as part of its social responsibility. Today, in Hai Ninh—a coastal commune where hundreds of households rely on offshore fishing for their livelihoods—we hope that these modest yet practical gifts will ease daily hardships and inspire confidence, enabling fishermen to go to sea with peace of mind and a strong sense of purpose in safeguarding our marine sovereignty.

Dr. Dao Xuan Hung also acknowledged the vital role of the community and businesses, especially BIXAPRO Seafood Factory, which has supported the program from the outset with great responsibility and compassion. “Even the smallest act of sharing can generate profound value when joined by others. We hope today’s program in Hai Ninh will inspire similar initiatives in other localities so that no one is left behind on the path toward sustainable development.”

He further emphasized that holding this event during Action Month for the Environment and Vietnam Sea and Islands Week highlights the critical role of community involvement in protecting natural resources and preserving the marine environment. “We hope that programs like this not only provide material support, but also help promote widespread awareness of environmental protection and the responsibility of every citizen—toward our living environment, our seas, and future generations. Every fresh water tank donated and every house built stands as a symbol of solidarity between journalists, businesses, and fishermen heading offshore — all embodying the spirit of mutual support and gratitude deeply rooted in our national tradition. As the saying goes, ‘when you drink the water, remember the well.’ It is also our duty to lift those who are struggling — for we are only as strong as the most vulnerable among us.

At the event, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nham, Vice Chairwoman of the People’s Committee of Hai Ninh commune, spoke on behalf of the local government and community to express heartfelt gratitude to the Journal and its sponsors: “Hai Ninh is a coastal commune where most residents earn their living from fishing. The donation of 16 water tanks is a valuable and practical gift that will help fishermen access clean water for their daily needs while at sea.”

She also shared details about the difficult situation of Mr. Truong Tam’s family, which is receiving support to build a charity house: “Mr. Tam's family is among the most disadvantaged households in the commune. He has six children. His wife and one child have passed away. Two children are disabled, and another has mental health issues. Now elderly and frail, he cares for his two seriously ill children in a dilapidated, makeshift shelter. This housing support will not only improve his living conditions but also offer tremendous emotional encouragement. On behalf of the government and people of Hai Ninh Commune, I sincerely thank the Agriculture and Environment Magazine and the Bixapro Seafood Import-Export Factory for their kindness and compassion, bringing hope and warmth to the people of our coastal region.”

The organizing committee and sponsors presented 16 water tanks to 16 fishing households

Following the speeches, representatives from the Organizing Committee and sponsoring organizations directly presented 16 water tanks to 16 representative fishing households, amid warm applause from the community and attending delegates. With their capacity to store clean water for extended periods, these tanks will provide a reliable source of fresh water, particularly during the dry season—when freshwater scarcity remains a constant challenge for coastal fishermen.

The event concluded in an atmosphere of warmth and emotion, filled with hope. The fresh water tanks had reached the fishermen. The first bricks had been laid for a loving home. Above all, these acts of kindness are helping empower coastal communities to remain steadfast at sea, to reach further offshore, and to protect the sacred sovereignty of the nation.
