Cop28 supports green transformation in developing countries

29/09/2023

TN&MTCOP28, the upcoming conference, is set to conclude international efforts in supporting developing countries and emerging economies in their green transformation.

The 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is scheduled to take place in the UAE from November 30th to December 12th.

Egypt's Minister of International Cooperation, Rania Al Mashat, affirmed on August 26th that the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from November 30th to December 12th, will provide a significant international platform to address climate change issues and its adverse impacts on nations.

According to Vietnam News Agency's correspondent in the Middle East-North Africa region, UAE's WAM news agency quoted Ms. Al Mashat emphasizing that UAE hosting COP28, following Egypt's hosting of COP27 in November 2022 in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh, will support international efforts in promoting climate action in the Arab and Middle East-North Africa regions, as well as leverage international focus on climate action in the region.

Ms. Al Mashat noted that international reports indicate that countries in the Middle East-North Africa region are among the most vulnerable to climate change risks, with 60% of the population in the region living in areas facing water stress, and 20 million people potentially needing to be displaced due to climate change.

According to the Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, the most important outcomes and collective actions taken over the past year within the framework of the National Green Projects Platform (Novi) and the Sharm El Sheikh Guidebook on Climate Finance will be presented at the upcoming COP28.

Ms. Al Mashat stated that she has participated in a series of events organized by the UAE in preparation for COP28 to develop a roadmap for promoting climate action in the region.

Minister Al Mashat further mentioned that COP27 had approved significant results regarding climate action, including the "loss and damage" fund, and COP28, shortly, will complete international efforts in supporting developing countries and emerging economies in their green transformation.
