Dr. Dao Xuan Hung, Editor-in-Chief of the Agriculture and Environment Magazine; Mr. Ngo Viet Anh, Director of the Center for Media development (Nhan Dan Newspaper); and Mr. Tran Dinh Hiep, Deputy Director of the Quang Binh Department of Agriculture and Environment, co-chaired the seminar.

The seminar was held in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 – June 21, 2025) and in response to Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2025, World Environment Day (June 5), and World Oceans Day (June 8).

Addressing the seminar, Deputy Minister Le Minh Ngan emphasized that the world is facing pressing environmental challenges such as climate change, sea-level rise, plastic pollution, ocean degradation, and the urgent need to preserve and restore ecosystems to achieve sustainable development goals.

With a coastline of over 3,260 kilometers and vast potential for marine tourism, Vietnam sees around 55% of its population residing in coastal areas. However, signs of marine pollution are emerging, natural resources and biodiversity continue to decline, and the exploitation and use of marine and island resources remain inefficient and unsustainable, placing tremendous pressure on environmental management and protection efforts.

“In response to Vietnam Sea and Islands Week, the Month of Action for the Environment 2025, World Environment Day, and World Oceans Day, this seminar is of great significance. It serves as a platform to exchange experiences, propose solutions, and expand cooperation in applying AI to media content development, marine cultural preservation, environmental protection, ocean plastic waste communication, and the promotion of sustainable marine tourism,” said Deputy Minister Le Minh Ngan.

As the host of the seminar, Dr. Dao Xuan Hung, Editor-in-Chief of the Agriculture and Environment Magazine, emphasized: “This seminar presents a valuable opportunity for journalists, policymakers, technology experts, and tourism enterprises to exchange insights, propose initiatives, and foster cooperation in applying artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism content development, marine cultural and environmental preservation, ocean plastic waste communication, and sustainable marine tourism development.”

At the seminar, experts presented various topics, focusing on trends in digital transformation in journalism and AI applications for promoting marine culture, protecting the ocean environment, and advancing green tourism models. Other topics included communication on ocean plastic pollution and environmental protection in seafood exploitation and processing.

In his presentation “Effectively applying AI in media newsrooms,” Mr. Ngo Viet Anh, Director of the Center for Media Development (Nhan Dan Newspaper), introduced key AI applications in editorial workflows and emphasized the rapid growth of digital media. He stressed the importance of enhancing digital skills to improve journalistic quality, especially in areas related to environmental culture and marine tourism development.

With the participation of experts, managers, journalists, and representatives from coastal localities, the seminar addressed urgent issues such as leveraging AI to enhance communication effectiveness and protect the marine environment. It also explored new pathways for developing tourism in connection with local cultural values and sustainable practices. The discussions reflected a consensus: digital transformation is no longer a trend but an imperative for journalism and environmental communication to become a pioneering force in spreading awareness, shaping behavior, and leading sustainable development.

The seminar was held in the context of Vietnam’s comprehensive push toward digital transformation and sustainable development. The active engagement of media agencies, state management bodies, and specialized units not only reflects a proactive spirit in adapting to technological revolutions but also demonstrates a strong commitment to elevating the role of communication in environmental protection, promoting cultural values, and sustainably utilizing marine and island resources. It marks a vital step in ensuring that the media does not remain on the sidelines but becomes an active partner in shaping the future.

As part of the event, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the photo exhibition “Action for a blue ocean,” featuring more than 80 works showcasing the lives of fishermen, the natural beauty of Vietnam’s seas and islands, human impacts on marine ecosystems, and cultural preservation efforts in Quang Binh and other coastal localities.

On this occasion, the Agriculture and Environment Magazine also launched the photo contest titled “Journalism and Vietnam’s Seas and Islands.” This is not merely a professional initiative but a meaningful call to journalists to use their pens as sails to spread love for the sea and islands, raise community awareness, and advocate for sovereignty protection and sustainable resource use. Amid growing climate change and complex geopolitical competition at sea, every quality journalistic work is a powerful message contributing to the defense of our sacred national maritime sovereignty.
